Locke Mtn Rd is gated at its start and there are no parking signs along around here. We drove back to the jct of Daisy Bryant and North Rd and parked in a plowed off spot. This was 0.2mi from Locke Mtn Rd and and 0.8mi (total) with 250ft of gain from the regular parking area. We met a couple of nice locals who politely informed us that we were not supposed to park there but that there is a parking area a ways back east along North Rd that is the winter parking area. This may add 2mi each way to the hike; we drove by it on the way in but didn't think it could have anything to do with Locke Mtn. |

First hike of the day. This is a new addition to the 12th ed. of the MMG. Note the 0.8mi/250ft of gain road walk each way described in the parking section above. The road walk would be much longer (not sure how long) if you parked at the lot along North Rd where you're evidently supposed to (hopefully this detail will get added to the next edition of the MMG). The trail is well marked and easy to follow even with snow on the ground. We broke trail with a bit of a crust which slowed us down but wasn't all that bad nor as bad as I thought it would be. Snow depth at this low elevation was of course not terribly deep but certainly warranted snowshoe use. This is a good trail for snowshoeing with gentle-moderate grades. Great views from West Ledge and at the end of the (current) trail. Note that although the kiosk shows the trail continuing over Barker Mtn (in parenthesis it says "Under Construction") the trail is not yet made. Gaia had us at 5mi, 1050ft og gain, 3hr50min. |
