Our first Maine 4K winter attempt and we found it very different than NH 4ks in the winter....we were the only ones on the trail and it looked like nobody had been there for a while. Completely unbroken trail. We started breaking through a few inches of crusty snow and the further we went the deeper it got. It took us 2 hours to make it from Horns Pond junction to Moose Falls Tentsite and we were exhausted. We just went a little past the tent site and as the terrain was getting steeper and we were battling through a couple of feet we realized the summit wasn't going to happen. We were about .7 from the Col when we turned back, broke out about 4 miles total. Will be back with a bigger group next time. |
