 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Large area to park off the side of the road. Room for many cars but only ever a few there while we were. I imagine this isn’t plowed in winter and you’d be reduced to parking on the side of the road instead. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Small Patches |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
I don’t believe there were any. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
All trails are blazed in blue I believe. We didn’t have any trouble following them. Trail signs were intact. Not much in the way of blowdowns; there was a stepover and duck under right next to each other on Kurt Diederich’s Climb maybe 10min from the base of the trail. I think they were mid-sized. I think a smaller blowdown was located that’s easily stepped over was located on Kane Path at the edge of the talus field. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
The iron ladders on Ladder Trail probably aren’t appropriate for them. Some of the other trails are steep and rough but short enough and not so scrambly that most hiking dogs will probably be fine. |

1st hike of the day during our stay in Acadia :) Our route: Ladder Trail —> Schiff Path OAB to ridge —> Schiff Path north to —> Homans Path (descent) —> walked around Wild Gardens —> Emery Path (ascent) —> Schiff Path —> Kurt Diederich’s Climb (descent) —> Kane Path to car.
Ladder Trail was quite a rude awakening without a warm up first. Very steep and pretty unrelenting thought hit all that scrambly if I recall correctly. Schiff Path was gentler and Homans Path, Emery’s Path, and Kurt Diederich’s Climb were all steep but not as bad as Ladder Trail and descending any of them wouldn’t be too bad. Ice was probably present on all of the trails to some degree or another but we never actually threw on the microspikes. That being said, I’d definitely have them with you. Not having them on definitely made for some very slow and cautious going in some spots. Temps were above freezing even overnight though so the ice was generally pretty soft. Also, I’ll note that with above freezing temps, there was also mud and water on the trail.
Gaia had us at 4.5mi, about 1600ft of gain, 3hrs. Keep in mind that some of this was meandering around the Sieur de Monts Spring and such though (the actual gardens are closed in winter). |
