Comments
Comments: Oversett Mountain and its surrounding trails was the last hike in the Oxford Hills section of the new edition of the Maine Mountain Guide which I had yet to do, so I headed over to Greenwood today to do this hike that I had been looking forward to for a while. First, I hiked the Sanborn River Loop, which is an easy and beautiful 3 mile loop along the Sanborn River. The trail dips up and down the banks of the small gorge that the river runs in and provides a very pleasant hike along the river. I then hiked the trails around Oversett Pond and up Oversett Mountain. The pond is beautiful and undeveloped, sitting below the cliffs of the mountain. From the top of the mountain, there is a lovely view across the pond and of the surrounding hills. You can also trace the route of the trail most of the way around the pond from the top of the mountain. The trails are very well maintained and marked, and they were quite busy today. I found it to be one of my favorite hikes in all of the Oxford Hills, and it is part of the 12,000 acre Crooked River Headwaters Conservation Easement, which is the same property that hikes such as Long Mountain, Round Mountain, and Speck Ponds are on.
