Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Rum Mountain, ME
Trails
Trails: ATV trail, Rum Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, September 22, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The trailhead officially starts on the shore of Lower Wilson Pond, reachable only by boat, but one can also get in via a logging road, 5.3 miles Greenville via East St/Katahdin Ironworks Road. The logging road (0.8 mi long) is in good shape (I drove it with my Honda Fit). It ends at a gravel pit, where a dedicated ATV trail can be followed on foot or mountain bike 1.2mi to an intersection with Rum Pond Trail at a brushy, sloped clearing. No trail sign at the clearing, but the trail is faintly visible in the brush. From there it is a 0.5 hike to the top.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: From the ATV Trail to the summit, the route is in good shape and appears well maintained, with only a few minor, recent blowdowns. The route is VERY steep, straight up, but it sees so little use erosion is not yet an issue.

Comments
Comments: Lots of fun cedar shingle signs on the ascent (hiking tips, nature interpretation) and a very unique summit memorial just before the top, with a good view. The trail continues over the top to an additional (obstructed) view at the top of a ledge.
