Today, we hiked into Dwelley Pond in the heart of Baxter. I had previously hiked to the pond from the northeast, so this time we hiked the shorter western approach. As the trail follows an old road, it is a rather easy hike to the pond. At the pond is a day use area, with a picnic shelter and fire pit, and a boat launch with a rental canoe. We had obtained the key to the canoe at the Matagamon Gate, and we spent a while paddling around the peaceful pond. These backcountry ponds are fun to explore from the water, and having the rental canoe available made it very easy to do! Before hiking back, we ate lunch in the picnic area. The quieter parts of Baxter are always fun to visit, and we saw no one else on the trail today. |
