 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The road in is in fine shape and I would think be doable for low clearance cars. No logging trucks on a Saturday but I’d be very wary of running into one on a weekday. On Gaia and other gps’s the road is labelled as Beaudry Rd not Gold Brook Rd. The right hand turn on the crest of the hill the last 0.4mi is not marked in any way; you’ve just got to know to turn onto it but it’s obvious with Gaia, if you’re paying attention to mileage markers, etc. This road has a large puddle on it and is much rougher. Low clearance should not attempt it but mid clearance should be okay. It’s rough and steep enough in a section that 2WD may struggle a little. You could probably get away with parking at the jct of the two roads but I’d be very careful to get way off to the side so as not to get hit by a logging truck. Also of note is that I drive from West Kennebago Mtn and drove dirt surfaces Tim Pond Rd to Eustis rather than on main roads. It’s a looong way but quicker and the road is in decent shape. My GPS didn’t figure this out though, trying instead to take me on Kennebago River Rd which was eventually gated. Lastly, I’ll note that I drove Beaudry Rd between Kibby Mtn and Number Five Mtn. Again, it’s a loooong way but doable with mid clearance. Other than a couple large puddles, some areas that were about to flood (now are likely flooded), and a section with some bad washout, low clearance cars would be fine. |

As far as I recall, the trail is not marked and the trail is not signed at its start. I do not specifically recall any blowdowns. The road, where it’s grassy, can be rather overgrown at times, but overall the walk is pleasant. |

2nd hike of the day after West Kennebago Mtn (redline and bushwhack to the true, off-trail highpoint). Note my parking/driving notes about getting between these two trailheads.
Although the “hike” is along a road rather than a trail, this was a rather pleasant road. It is overgrown, grassy, and muddy at times down low but I didn’t pick up any ticks, the road is mostly shaded, the woods beautiful, the grade usually gradual, and the road surface is often quite nice, especially as you gain elevation. The hike is longer than the guidebook says, closer to 2.3mi, than 2mi. The road shown going to the top on Gaia is indeed the trail (I had doubted this upon reading the guidebook’s description) which helps with getting to the “trailhead” too. The ladder to the observation deck looked a little sketchy. I climbed it but then saw that the observation deck was missing a few pieces too ;P I’m sure you’d be fine but I opted to just snap a few photos while standing on the ladder rather than getting up onto the deck. Great views! Gaia had me at 4.6mi, 1050ft of gain, 2hrs. |
