Comments
Comments: This recent rainy weather made for ideal conditions for a waterfall hike today. I decided to check out a pair of falls which I had not visited before, Poplar Stream Falls in Carrabassett Valley. Poplar Stream Falls consist of two separate waterfalls on two different streams. The waterfall on Poplar Stream is shorter, but has more water running over it and a better swimming hole. The waterfall on South Brook is taller, but often has low flow in summer and no swimming hole. However, flow was not an issue today, and both waterfalls were quite impressive.

The waterfalls can be accessed by trails in the Maine Huts and Trails network. Like most of the network, the trails haven't seen much maintenance in a while, but the area is in better condition than much of the trail system with only a few areas of significant overgrowth on the trails. I made a loop from the Airport Trailhead, utilizing Warren's Trail on the way out, and Larry's Trail on the way back. I also visited the semi-abandoned Poplar Stream Hut, which looked like it hadn't been touched since winter. The grass hadn't been cut and there were spiderwebs across many of the doors.

The falls and surrounding area are quite beautiful, and make for a nice hike, especially on a wet and cloudy day.
