 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
All depends on your car/bravery. I was hoping to at least drive in a couple miles after hearing reports of the road conditions. I drove into the second small bridge with my low clearance Mazda 3, but the rocks they have used to repair the road are pretty large - some softball size - so wasn't keen to risk getting a flat tire. I when I was there, there were logging trucks coming in and I couldn't see a good place to pull off, so ended up parking about 100 yards down route 16 at a small pull off. Did the entire road walk.
If you have decent clearance, you can get at least 2 miles in. There are plenty of spots to pull off. If you have 4WD, good tires, and some bravery you can currently drive all the way to the end of the road. |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
All the bridges along the logging roads are in good shape. There is one minor stream crossing once you get onto the trail properly, but nothing more than a hop. |

There are a ton of them right now. Was hiking in my bug net for a good part of the day. |

Doing the whole road walk adds 4.5 miles to each end of this hike. If it's a hot day too, it can be pretty tough as the logging road provides almost no shade. I was glad to finally dive into the woods for the proper start of the hike. The trail itself is easy to follow - continue on the logging road until you get to the yellow post/small cairns/big arrow made of sticks pointing to the left towards the summit! (45.11986, -70.59016) The herdpath is well established, but a little tight in places and steep, gaining ~800' in the last half mile. The terrain is very mossy and forgiving though. I did see some pretty fresh bear scat about 20 yards from the summit can, so keep your eyes open. There were also tons of moose tracks on the road, but didn't see any. |
