 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Evans Notch Road is open - hooray! Plenty of room at the East Royce/Spruce Hill trailhead. I don't think it ever filled up during the day. |
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery |
 | Recommended Equipment: |
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Nothing major. |
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The lower part of the trail was very wet and eroded in places, with lots of fallen leaves. A few blowdowns over the course of the trail. Signs were all in place. |
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Shouldn't have any issues. |
 | Bugs: |
Yes, plenty. Recommend putting on strong bug spray at the trailhead. Hikers who are less tolerant of bugs may want a head net as well. |
 | Lost and Found: |
Nothing. |

This was redline #1 of the day. Not too much to report. Spruce Hill Trail is one of those trails that prioritizes convenience over beauty - it's not the most interesting or scenic trail out there, but it's fairly easy and will get you to Speckled Mountain with a lot less elevation gain than the standard route up Bickford Brook. I just went to the end of the trail - where it meets Bickford Brook Trail - and turned around there.
I met just one other hiker on Spruce Hill, and a group of hikers at the junction with Bickford Brook. I would see that same group later in the day when I redlined Bickford Slides! |
