| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The trailhead lot of ME 26 is paved and plowed. Can hold many cars. Privies, though I did not explore these to see if they had toilet paper. In peak seasons, the Rangers do an awesome job at keeping these cleaned and stocked. |

Route:
Out and back on the AT to the summit of West Baldpate
Snowshoes were king today. The trail was much travelled between the Table Rock junctions. After the northernmost junction the trail is loosely consolidated granular snow. Snowshoes proved their worth. There is a somewhat consolidated trench, but not enough for spikes. We had to break trail trough several inches of new snow, much more so above the shelter. Above the shelter there are at least 4 inches of new snow, that we pounded down with our tracks. Today’s winds kept temps below freezing allowing fantastic traction in snowshoes. The trail was pretty hard to follow in some parts once past the shelter and climbing the seriously gnarly bits due to drifting and general Maine trail standards (I.e. tough climbing through tight alpine trees).
We broke out the trail, it’s ready for early spring travel. I don’t know if the trail is broken to East Baldpate. The rock ledges on the shoulder of East Baldpate were emerging from their winter blanket quite nicely. Looked quite doable. Winds were too fierce today to take on this mountain in Maine. |
