We started early enough that the snow quality was good. On the descent it was crazy sticky and gross. Whoever broke out the trail after the last storm used some creative license. There are about 4 ot 5 places where they deviated from the trail but not badly. The final deviation is a doozy. It takes you through a spruce trap and along side the mountain about 500 feet before rejoining the trail right before that final steep ascent near the junction of the Mahoosuc trail. We contemplated rebreaking it correctly but figured that might be even more confusing with tracks going all over the place so we just followed what was already broken. It will get you there... We saw a total of 6 other people today, 2 in spikes rototilling and postholing the trail and 4 in snowshoes smoothing things out. The trail is WAY too soft for spikes, don't let the first 1/2 mile fool you. You need snowshoes. Don't be that guy trashing the trail - all the snowshoe people will talk about you behind your back while rolling their eyes and gesturing wildly. |
