We didn't see a single soul during this hike, except on the golf club trails. We bushwhacked from the golf club to Caribou Valley Road, then reached the Appalachian Trail after a long walk on the road. The initial plan was to do South Crocker, North Crocker and Redington, but the climb was more difficult than expected because of the important amount of fresh powdered snow and the fact that we opened the trail from the bushwack to South Crocker summit and viewpoint. The steep section of South Crocker was hard to climb, because we were sliding down at each step. We had to kick hard in the snow with our snowshoes (MSR Evo Ascent) to get a good grip to climb. Our trekking poles were also very helpful! When we reached South Crocker summit, we were already exhausted. After our lunch break, we tried to find a path to reach Redington, then checked the AT trail to North Crocker and we decided to go back. The trees were constantly in our faces because of the amount of snow. Since our energy was getting low, turning back was the best decision for our safety. At least, we grabbed one summit! The tricky part on the way down was the steep part. I buttsled most of the time and had to use trees to stop me! We definitely will be back in summer to do North Crocker and Redington. |
