Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Goose Eye Mountain, ME
Trails
Trails: Goose Eye Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, November 24, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Success Pond Road open, icy but not terribly slick for my Subaru. Made it the 6 or so miles no problem, parked in the AMC trailhead for Goose Eye/Carlo
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First two crossings made possible with Hillsound spikes as the rocks are covered with lofty ice with some loose snow on top. Crust too thin to support crossing at this point.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One step over looked like it had been there for a bit. Nothing major, all good.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No one but hunters out Thanksgiving and they were way off on other trails/woods.
Bugs
Bugs: Nada
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Dasani water bottle almost at treeline stuck in the snow, likely fell out of a pack. Water is obviously frozen ;)

Comments
Comments: Primarily writing this post in case any other hiker friends planning Goose Eye/Carlo/Mahoosuc are curious as to the state of Success Pond Road. At the moment it is a joy to drive, ice but no problem for my Subaru, 95% of the rocks are covered with ice and snow, got some corduroy to deal with that will rattle your fillings out but the road is clear likely down to the Pond.

Trail was great, someone laid down fresh tracks in the past few days. Water crossings not high, easily rock-hopable with spikes. Thin covering of snow over leaves & mud down low then switching to minor ice under the snow as one gains elevation (2400' or so). Snow was a joy to ascend, began to ball on the Hillsounds on the descent with the sunny day.

Rocks toward the summit were ice with 3-4" of crusty snow covering, a few maneuvers required care but over all the trail was in great shape. Great Climb for Thanksgiving.
Enjoy!
