 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Small lot (about 6 cars) that was full. People were parking on the road by the time we left. Lot is very icy. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Mostly frozen over. One large leap, although the water was only a few inches deep if you missed. Poles would have been beneficial for extra oompf. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Black Snout has a tree across the trail. Dog had a difficult choice as it was fairly tall to leap, but low to crawl under. Humans climbed over fairly easily. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Great hike for the dog. We saw three others on the trail, so popular spot. |
|
 | Bugs: |
None at this time of year. |

Really nice winter hike. Gradual at first next to a pretty stream, with a fairly steep section before the trail splits to go to either mountain top. Both have fantastic views and are well worth the hike. Mt. Shaw a little better, but Black Snout is worth the .5 mile hike. Trail was in very good condition. Solid, firm packed snow/ice, with a few spots at the top where people had post-holed due to drifts. Microspikes needed. Great hike with the dog. The water was flowing in the stream, so places for him to get a drink easily. |
