Puzzle Mountain Trail (Grafton Loop Trail), Woodsum Spur

I started early enough that I was able to use spikes on the ascent. The blue blazed trail up to the summit is badly postholed. I kind of tiptoed around the holes. Once I was on the backside of the mountain via the Woodsum Spur, the snowshoes went on. The snow was sticky and clumped as no one other than a moose had been up there recently. The moose did posthole the trail but she gets a pass. By the time I rejoined the blue blazed trail it was warm and the trail was softening. In the sunny areas, the trail was total slush. I kept the snowshoes on the whole way down in an effort to smooth things out. No other hikers were wearing them today so the trail is pretty trashed.    |
