Trails: Appalachian Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, July 10, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Accessed the AT from Bemis Road/Track. There are no trail signs at this crossing - to get there follow Bemis Road all the way to the end where you will cross a small single lane bridge and travel right along the lake. The trail access is .9 miles from this bridge on the right (Bemis Road becomes Bemis track shortly after the bridge). Road surface is fine for any type of vehicle up to the trail. There was a spot just beyond with parking for 2 cars also on the right. Looking back you'll see the white blaze where the trail re-enters the woods. Today there was also a large orange road work sign right across from the trail.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None to worry about.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is in great shape - only a couple of very small blowdowns which are easily stepped over
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Would be an easy hike for the canines - steep getting up First peak but nothing to hard. Normally there is little water on this trail until the lean to but today there were a number of small trickling streams that could provide water.
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes were out in force today from the trailhead to the summit - bug spray is advisable.

Comments
Comments: A warm and sunny day today with some great views. For those heading up the best views are along the open ledges prior to Peak 2, from Peak 2, and from another stretch of open ledges a short distance beyond Peak 2. Peak 3 has some limited views from nearby open ledges and there are no views from Peak 1. Trail was mostly dry - there are a number of mud pits to navigate but they generally have well placed rocks to get you across - only ended up in the mud once but it was deep. Had the trail to myself heading up but coming back ran into about 15 people all heading to the lean to right before peak 3.
