Sandy River crossing via a bridge. No other significant crossings. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The crown of tree blocking trail between Piazza Rock and Ethel Pond. Improvised trail around obstacle. Tree across trail 3 feet above ground uphill from Eddy Pond. A rudimentary trail around although one can duck under tree. The bog bridges are frequently wobbly as there appears to be inadequate spiking of the walking surface logs to the underlying support logs. Not sure why this technique is used. Some of the bog bridges near Mud Pond are deteriorated. Otherwise the AT is in good condition with good signage. |

| Comments: |
The Saddleback-Horns hike has about a three mile stretch of open ledge that allows for great views including the Maine lakes region and the high peaks. This is one of the best Maine hikes. The AT also passes three ponds, Piazza Rock, and caves. Many hikers ascended Saddleback via the ski trail approach to shorten the distance. Many AT hikers on the trail. |
