Trails: Notch Trail, Mahoosuc Trail, Speck Pond Trail, road walk
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, August 6, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Success Pond road is decently graded, no major potholes. That said, be sure your car is in good working order. It's a long walk back to town.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Brooks are reasonably low -- nothing really major after the storms passed through.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is in good shape overall, although there are a few significant blow-downs from the storm. The notch itself was spared for the most part. Note that some of the mud puddles are way deeper than you think. I saw one guy go down literally to the top of his thigh.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No pups on the trail, and honestly, I'm not sure the notch is dog appropriate without a lot of people to help out in the trickier bits.
Bugs
Bugs: Mild, even non existent in places.

Comments
Comments: This had been on my to-do list for awhile. Glad I finally got out there. It's very slow going -- took me just about an hour to go the one mile of the notch -- but very worthwhile. I highly recommend it to anyone who's sitting on the fence. If you take everything as it comes, and don't get hung up in all the "toughest mile" stuff, you'll find it's really not hard per se. It just takes some thought and some care in where you place your feet. And you'll see things that you won't see anywhere else in the Whites. 10/10. I checked it off my to-do list, but unsurprisingly, it's back on the list.

Photos and a more detailed write-up are on my blog.
