Peaks Holt Pond Preserve, ME
Trails
Trails: Holt Pond Loop
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, April 30, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked in the main lot off Grist Mill Road, which was dry. The road coming from the east is deeply rutted and could be iffy for some vehicles, but the section coming from the west is worse--deep mud. This can all be avoided by parking at the corner of Perley/Grist Mill/Chaplins Mill and walking in. Do not expect to be able to safely park in other locations...there is nowhere to pull off the road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Most of the boardwalks were above water, but sections on the western and southwestern sides of the loop were under running water and very tricky to get through with dry feet.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few blowdowns, but all avoidable. A couple signs have washed downstream, but the trail in those areas is obvious.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Dogs are not allowed.
Bugs
Bugs: They're baaack....

Comments
Comments: Holt Pond Preserve, Bridgton. I highly recommend this loop as a combination of many different unique environments. Quiet, peaceful and beautiful. Even young children can make it from the parking lot to the Holt Pond Overlook or the beaver dam on the Muddy River.
