Peaks Big Moose Mountain, ME
Trails: Big Moose Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 7, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The snow bank has been broken and there was a rough plow done for about .15 miles earlier in the winter. With four wheel drive and high clearance it was easy to pull in, park, and leave. Two wheel drive low clearance may lead to some adventures.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There is some open water on the lower part of the trail. All either bridged or easy walk around.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is one significant blow down just before the sign for the scenic overlook. Walk around to the left going up is easier than to the right. Perhaps not a maintenance issue, but the roof of the old cabin has collapsed and a section of wall is leaning outward and is held up by a small spruce tree.

Comments: Overall good snow conditions. Variable, but largely able to stay on top. Trail was easy to find. It appeared as if it had been 3 or 4 weeks since anyone has been up. We used snowshoe and there should be a good track in areas protected from the wind. The track we made going up was drifted in on our return up on the windswept ridge.
