Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Pine Hill, Lord Hill, ME
Trails
Trails: Conant Trail, Mine Loop, Mine Loop Connector, Horseshoe Pond Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, May 12, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the crossroads of Barbour and North Barbour roads, just off Deer Hill Road. Deer Hill Road open along its entire length, though it's fairly soft between Conant and Horseshoe Pond trails, high clearance recommended until things firm up a bit.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of Bradley Brook between Pine and Lord was easily rock hopped on damp rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Several downed trees across all the trails traveled today. Conant had the fewest, with just a couple stepovers along its entire length. Horseshoe Pond had one particularly large birch deadfall in its upper section, and a couple of small crowns down. Mine Loop and the connector had a couple of stepovers each. Blazing generally good on these trails, if a bit faded in spots.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: One lucky pup was out with its owner, who we saw twice.
Bugs
Bugs: Fairly awful down low, black flies mostly. Picked up a couple of ticks on the southern leg of Conant Trail, between the loop junction and the Johnson cellar hole, and in the logged area ascending Pine Hill from there.

Comments
Comments: A nice cloudy day to knock off these trails. I'd mentioned what a miracle it would be to have the road open, since it was closed when we were there last week... and a miracle it was. Even with the clouds, the views from these two peaks didn't disappoint, and with the exception of the hike down to the road (then back up) on Horseshoe Pond Trail, the trails were generally gentle. Only saw the one local guy with his dog all afternoon. Another set of trails out of the way with Rachel!
