The Grafton Loop Trail (GLT) on this section to Puzzle has been freshly blazed to the summit. The major blow down that was blocking the trail at the start of the Mahoosuc Land Trust boundary (the enormous pine with its numerous branches) has been sawn and moved off the trail. Nice work, MATC!
There are a few patches of snow left in the dense hemlock growth areas. No need for winter foot gear or equipment. One larger snow drift area at the halfway point (the shoulder of Puzzle where there’s a great view of Speck and the Baldpates) where I still sank above the ankle for a patch of trail about 75 feet long. This should be gone after the next good day of full sun.
Wildflowers starting to bloom. Several very small patches of fiddleheads seen. Finally, spring is here in Western Maine! Rainy day but still a nice one to be out on the trails. View at summit still permitted good sights, even over to the Whites with their heads stuck in the clouds. |
