Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Penobscot residents on ATVs working on their cabin (met daughter walking down the trail) so that is how we knew who made the fresh tracks. Lower part of trail from upper logging road crossing to pond is flagged but there are lots of blowdowns and not many are using this anymore. Here's a great report that I found helpful: http://www.peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=981413

Comments: On our way back from Boundary (Gosford, Canada route) we drove in North Road to hike Snow Mountain, Chain of Ponds. There were four cars parked at the end. This is Penobscot Indian Territory. We followed the road/trail/atv road all the way and at the ripped yellow snowmobile sign that points left we went straight up what seemed like a brook bed, a few blowdowns to crawl under before we hit the road again. We went right here, straight goes to the Pond) and followed it until we came to a small cairn and some pink ribbon, this is where trail comes up from Pond and goes straight across road and up to the Mountain. Good path, easy to follow. Met two guys coming down that recognized me and thanked me for introducing them to the AMC 4ks, remarked how my story about Tripyramids inspired them and now they are just one peak away from NEHH! We climbed tower twice, first time it was cloudy and then five minutes later they lifted so we climbed again to see where we were! Just before summit there is a nice view ledge with good open views in case you hate heights. We retraced our way back down to the road but we decided to just go straight and try our luck with the old trail to the pond, lots of blowdowns and few travel this way (it was well flagged). Pond was pretty and a few old canoes sit on the shore. We took road all the way back instead of going down the drainage shortcut. It was still pretty muddy but avoidable but recent rains would make this trail more horrible. There is a hard left off this....otherwise road goes uphill to who knows where... When we got back to the car my cellphone was not in my pocket. We took a break a half an hour ago, eeeek. We dumped our packs and started walking up the trail again and in just 7 minutes we found my phone unbroken lying in the middle of the trail/road, whoohoo
