Hiked the South Ridge Trail at 330 AM to catch the sunrise at the summit. The forecast included clear skies, stiff winds, and an overnight low of 34*F in Bar Harbor. Trails were well-marked. Occasionally water collected in low points on the trail. This created mud on the lower section of the trail. At and above the bare bedrock, this created visible pools of ice at low points and black ice where runoff crossed the trail. Most ice was easily avoidable.
Since temperatures were near freezing, winds were likely the major cause of ice formation. Ice melted after sunrise. |
