Comments
Comments: A perfect day in Acadia a long time since I've seen such clear blue skies - could see for miles and miles - took carriage road to Sargent Northwest trail and then a traverse across - many ski tracks along the way - stories in AMC outdoors and backpacker magazine have done a good job of highlighting this as a skiing locale and snow was still available! All Trails mostly solid and can be done with care without snowshoes. Northwest ridge - one set of snowshoe tracks up - packed snow with a crust which holds weight as long as you stay in the existing tracks - track veers off trail about .25 mile below summit and heads through trees - actual trail bears right across snow covered ledge but if you follow tracks you meet back up with trail .1 mile below summit. Summit area is bare rock which continues for about 1/4 mile along the ridgeline. Heading down south ridge trail you hit a nice stretch of solid snowfields just above maple springs trail junction - beyond upper hadlock brook junction followed a single ski track which was off and on actual trail to Amphitheater junction - ski tracks proved to be solid but a step off to either side without snowshoes you were were sinking in deep snow - did managed one serious post hole and ended up above my waist in snow in this stretch climbine up a ledge. Amphitheater and lower hadlock brook were solidly packed by prior snowshoe traffic. Met 2 gentlemen up on the summit that were skiing the various slopes.
