Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No issues getting around the water...the mud however is inevitable
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is some work being done on the trail, the addition of culverts and ditches does help with the water flow on the trail but is making for lots of mud. The upper trails have a lot of bare rock that is wet and slippery; many sub trails are being forged along the sides by hikers not wanting to slip. Some blow down here and there and its not easy to always distinguish between the old trails and the new trails but there are enough blazes to get you to the top without too many issues.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The dogs didn't seem to mind the heat with all of that cold mountain water around for sipping and dipping.
Bugs
Bugs: Holy black flies batman!!!!!! Don’t go depending on your off bug spray to stop them either. If you don’t have a hood and a good down home, sure-thing remedy for these bad boys, don’t be surprised if your summit is a short stay and you find yourself running down the mountain for your car. On the trail they are somewhat bearable; once at the top you will be wishing you packed a flame thrower. Be warned!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: (Lost) Several pounds of flesh to the fly gods....

Comments
Comments: It was a hot hazy day for this climb, which does nothing for the views but overall we had lots of fun with this moderate up and down trail; compared to the mega-haul we did last week on Speckled. Hikers should expect to run into some of the big machines employed in the drainage and clearing processes that are expected to continue for the next few months (they were even working on Sunday). They are respectable to the hikers and will shut down their machines to let you pass…if they see you….make sure they see you! You should also anticipate some slippery rocks on the upper part of the trail so take your time and watch your footing. And lastly, bring black fly repellent if you want to enjoy your day…if not, expect to be visited by lots of flying friends!
