Hardest part of the day was getting there from Stratton, ME. The persistent light snow made driving difficult and took almost 3 hrs to get there. Temps were around 20 all during the hike. Wore snowshoes car to car. Unpacked light powder 1-3" at the start, deepening to 8-10" higher up. Followed main road until it dried up along creek, then bushwhacked up to higher road several hundred yds NW. This road led to what I assume was the summer lot. Followed open trail until it also dried up. Took path of least resistance, but still ended up in heavy spruce with occasional open(relatively) space. Summit surrounded by bands of heavy spruce and plenty of fallen trees. Found the summit with canister. Thanks to the spatula, we were able to open and sign. Last signature was 11/3/2013. Views must be better on the way down, as we picked a much better route, staying more east on the descent. Thanks to recent moose tracks leading the way. No spruce on the descent. Light snow all day. Great hike although spent more time in the car going to and from. Thanks again to Bryan for your advice. |
