Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Date of Hike: Friday, August 16, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We took Judd Road, which loops around from the southeast, because of reports of Enchanted Mountain Road being in bad shape. Judd Road would require high clearance and probably 4WD due to two washed out sections. Enchanted Mountain Road looks like it has been recently regarded for active logging operations at the base of the mountain, so it may be a viable way in again.

Comments
Comments: AMC Maine Mountain Guide is already out of date on this one, as the base of Coburn/the old Enchanted Mountain ski area is being logged. From the old ski area parking lot (now a logging landing) at the junction of Judd and Enchanted Mountain roads, we continued north on Judd, past two foundations on the right, then parked at a split in the road, where Judd continued north, whilst a 4 wheeler road started to ascend.
We ascended the 4 wheeler road (an old ski trail) to the top of the ski area (a few random buildings), then followed a snowmobile trail a little bit further uphill, then took a right onto a footpath (blowdown obscuring the entrance). The foot path was quite steep, but not technical.
Excellent views from the observation tower. Some similar views available from the ground.
We then descended from the summit on the snowmobile trail, which initially heads southwest. There is a fork, where both ways end up rejoining (the right side is the more established). A bit more gradual, but it still leads back to the top of the ski area.
We were tempted to check out some other ATV trails for descent, but there's enough slash in the lower elevations that we opted to return via the same route.
