After descending Cupsuptic Snow Thursday, towed sleds about 8 miles up Burnt Mtn, Big Canyon, Megantic, Cupsuptic Pond Roads and Gray's Connector, making camp 25 yds off a road junction on the east side of the Cupsuptic River. Met a four man Border Patrol team on the way in (Encounter #1) asking our objective, gear, experience, where parked. They handle rescues. Then a nice chat about Border Patrol duties, hiking, etc.
Next morning we hiked north to the boundary swath, then east and north 6.5 miles to Boundary Peak. Canister hanging by a cord, frozen. Returned 3 miles to a high point ~3250 ft where we turned due east into the USA to 'whack to White Cap. Immediately found an AMC 3000 sign and jar. Continued dowm thru a mix of difficult spruce and ten foot wide logging slashes across the saddle and up to White Cap. Then on to NKD in the usual way down the ATV trail and across the saddle picking up the herdpath to the summit. Returned to the saddle and took the Porter Brook track into the west side drainage and eventually back to camp. Found a snowmobile track right up to the woods edge and postholes to our tent. Total about 17 miles. Another long, great day with Pat (Bombadil) |
