OK - this was a quest based on a search for dinosaur tracks near Greenfield but on my way to NH. Took a few deadend trails before finding the correct way to go. This is not the Nature Trail. Basic instructions which were pretty accurate: once park at the trailhead, walk the road up the hill past the campground gate. Eventually, there is a trail going up the hill on the right. You know you are on the correct trail when you see a metal sign that tells you not to remove rocks or take samples. Anyway, suddenly you turn left and go down a steep descent into a flat area bordered by a cliff - this is the Lily Pond Quarry - it is not as big as I was expecting. There are flat stones you walk across and then see stairs at the far left-hand-side to climb up out of the quarry. At the top of the stairs, a few feet ahead is a large horizontal "track slab" - I would guess it was probably pulled out of the quarry long ago and placed on the trail for visitors to view? I could see a couple decent prints but this pad is out in the elements so I'm not sure how it has lasted this long. The tracks are maybe 5" across and appear to be 3-toed. You might need some imagination. Still, kinda interesting. Actual distance is maybe .6 miles RT but we went down a few dead ends and ended up going around .8 miles overall. Worth checking out if you're in the area! |
