Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, March 15, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking was plowed out but is really tight, surface is packed snow/slush/mud with some deep snow in places. Some slippage with AWD/all-seasons, I advise caution in a FWD car without winter tires at least until it thaws out a bit.
Surface Conditions

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Numerous trees and branches bent and broken by wet snow, especially at the start of the trail. Trail went around. Was too early to tell what needs to be cleared and and what will spring back up.

Comments
Comments: 2.5ft of fresh snow is no joke! Trails are mostly established by now by snowshoers and skiers, but plenty of soft snow around. Didn't even think of taking the snowshoes off. The steeper, more direct Midstate Trail is well-packed but someone went all the way up without floatation, leaving nasty deep postholes behind. Snow was so soft, I punched through in some places on the trail WITH snowshoes! In a couple of places the trail splits up and is hard to follow as it doesn't follow the blazes - my advice is to stick to the more packed trail unless you are up for punching through to your hips.
The loopier Nutting Hill/State Line trail is not as well-traveled and was a bit of work even with snowshoes - don't even think of barebooting here yet, unless you want to punch through to your knees. Looks like one or two people continued north on Midstate to the NH border but that trail looked like it still needs a lot of work.
Plenty of backcountry skiers and snowboarders around! Lots of snow on the ground and on the trees - it's a winter wonderland here... in March.
