All trails in great shape. NOTE: At the Wapack/Midstate Trail junction after Nutting Hill, a sign states "Rt. 119 - 0.8 mi." Then about 0.4 mi. toward the highway is another sign that says "Rt. 119 - 0.79 mi." Obviously, one of these signs is wrong. ;) |

Opting to avoid the wind chills in the Whites, I went with the wind chills closer to home, and did this familiar loop. The Wapack was fully packed down until just after the split boulder, where it got less consolidated. I wore spikes up until this point, but switched to snowshoes for the remainder of the hike. Bright sun on top, but very cold with stiff winds. Both summit knobs have been scoured free of snow. From there, I followed the Wapack north (also reasonably well packed) to the MA/NH border and picked up the State Line Trail, which had a pair of rough snowshoe tracks, very choppy. Hopping back on the Midstate Trail, it was an easy cruise back down to the car.
Several folks were out today, including dad/daughter snowboarders in the woods just below the summit. |
