Excellent first trip to Wachusett Mtn State Reservation. I initially went to check out the Pine Hill Trail as it was a CCC-cut ski racing trail in the 1930's. The ranger at the desk did not seem enthusiastic AT ALL when I asked him about skiing it, but, he did suggest many other circuits for XC skiing.
Very fun place to explore - several "pools" with nice stonework mini-dams. Neat Balance Rock. Many beautiful carriage-type roads and vistas as well. I didn't do every trail but I did find some uncrowded ones. My favorite was probably the Semuhenna Trail - just felt more remote than the rest. The windmills weren't active today despite a steady breeze????
Anyway, fun place with that old Massachusetts feel though there really is no getting away from the crowds!!! So many families with small children really enjoying their hikes - it was great to see!!! :) |
