Trails
Trails: Midstate Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, June 8, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Spotted a car at Barre Falls Dam, ample parking. A bunch of disc golfers parked there, but still plenty of space. Other car at the place we started, East Hill Road in Rutland. Room for 3 or 4 cars there, but there was no one else today.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All minor crossings except for one horrendous almost impassable location, see below.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Big pine blowdown that has turned in to a decent walkaround at around Mile 51.4 northbound by the trailguide book. Some brushing is needed in that general area a couple of miles south of Barre Falls Dam. Major flooding present still in the area just north of the trail's crossing of Mass Rail Trail, due to enthusiastic beaver activity. It is even worse than the last time I was through there a few years ago. Someone has placed rudimentary bridges and logs in water and we added a few logs as well, but it is nearly impassable for quite a stretch. Trekking poles are very helpful. The faint of heart may turn around here. This area needs a more permanent solution, either bridging or a major rerouting.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Denali enjoyed the walk. Terrain excellent for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes were horrendous. DEET helped some, but there were areas where the bugs almost caused insanity. You really had to keep moving. We also found one tick.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Saw a light blue towel on the trail, and I picked up a couple of used shotgun shells which I later threw in the trash.

Comments
Comments: 7 or 8 mile section of the Midstate Trail from East Hill Road to Barre Falls Dam. Mostly gentle ups and downs. Only significant roadwalk was on dirt roads. With Snapsquatch, Couch Puppy, Glass Ballerina, and Denali.
