Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking lot was adequately plowed from a recent big storm, but not from the inch or two from the previous night. But there was no problem there. When we arrived we discovered someone had knocked over one of the portajohns, but when we got back the authorities had righted it. We did not dare go in that one, however. We didn't see any other cars when we arrived or when we left.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One tidal creek that was more or less snow bridged. Gammy jumped over. I took a chunk of ice and planted it in the middle and used it for a stepping stone. I think if we had stepped right on what looked snow bridged we would have gone through.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No problems.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sign says "No Pets" but we did see some canine tracks near the trailhead. Probably domestic dog.

Comments
Comments: Part of the National Seashore in Wellfleet. There was all kinds of snow on the trail, some was crusty, some powder. Some powder over crust, some ice, some drifted powder. Some small parts of the trail were bare sand due to the wind. Spotted several seals in the water at Jeremy Point. We followed very fresh coyote tracks on much of the trail, and found the remains of a coyote breakfast, what was apparently the remains of a seal pup he found on the beach, then dragged to where he felt safe to eat it. (Scenario reconstructed by analyzing the tracks in the snow). Found a couple of dead razorbills on the beach, one in pretty good shape. Temperature was just below freezing. We wanted to walk back up the beach (north) from Jeremy Point to the trailhead but it was so windy that we escaped back to the east side of the dune as soon as we could and hiked back the way we came, through the sheltered woods. I used Microspikes the whole way, Gammy barebooted it. I think a good case could have been made for snowshoes over most of the trail as well. We didn't see a human soul all day.
