Comments: Left Boston Monday night and hiked to Lake in the Clouds area and tented Monday night. Monday night was just perfect. We could see Washington summit from Lakes and could not wait to see sunrise. By morning you could see only 100' feet and there was a mix of rain and sleet and a 30-40mph wind. We decided to summit reguardless. Bear boot from Lakes but switched to crampons when we came to a large slide and a blue ice flow where the trail cuts across the fall line. After this we could have gone to show shoes but decided to stay in crampons. Battled sleet and high winds all the way to the summit, but we got there. When we arrived our bags and us were covered in rime ice. After a clif bar and a glvoe change we headed back down. Wind was blowing 60-75mph but it was warm, about 30. The Gulfside was crazy. We walked leaning 15 degrees to the left so we would get blown off the ridge. The wind was ripping! There was no perfect foot wear, you went from blue ice, sticky snow, slush to rock. At one point I stepped on what looked like ice but turned out to be about 2 feet of slush. Yes I got WET! Hike down Jewell was nice and used snowshoes most of the way. We were happy to make the summit as our last trip got us to about .3 miles from the summit before having to turn back (Lions Head Winters on the trip - http://chrisdiannefamily.com/2013/02/18/winter-camping-trip-with-travis/).
