Attempted Ascutney on 12/27 via Weathersfield trail. The trail is pretty well tracked out up to Crystal Cascade falls. Beyond that it's not as well packed. I wore my snowshoes the entire trip, but we only made it about a half mile beyond the falls before turning around because my buddy didn't have snowshoes and footing was proving difficult for him without them. Someone had hiked up the day before us but the trail was not as well packed as it was up to the falls and there were a number of deeper snowdrifts throughout the trail. Snow was too light to create any postholing, but he was sinking in pretty deep in places. Definitely need snowshoes if going beyond the falls. If only going as far as Crystal Cascade Falls you can get away without the shoes, but I'd recommend them anyways as I was moving much easier/faster with them than my buddy was without them. |
