After Dorset we decided we had daylight left to burn and drove over to hike Equinox, about 20 minutes or less driving time between trailheads. The sun was high in the sky and we didn't get to enjoy its warmth since we were hiking up the east side of the mountain. We met a few people coming down the trail while we hiked up. More crusty ice than on Dorset and mostly easy to avoid. This is a grind--the trail that goes straight up. The reward is an excellent summit panorama. Visitor Center and auto road appears to be closed for the season. On the descent near the antenna we headed down the way we had come up but on the side of the trail there was a bench and a large stone memorial honoring a dog. "oh oh" we didn't come up this way--easy to go straight on the Lookout Trail instead of staying on the Blue Summit Trail that bears slightly right (could use some brushing but the signs are huge and obvious so it was completely my inattention that caused this very short detour but we got to see the memorial). Excellent hike. Highly recommend Cilantro Restaurant, 5036 Main St. for good value and quick counter service for yummy Tacos and Burritos and thirst quenching limeade. Thanks Liz for joining me. |
