| Comments: |
we walked the road for less than ten minutes through an impressive sugar operation to a 4 way junction. both right and left look good, but straight ahead on the overgrown grassy road is the direct route in to the base of umpire and follows the road as shown on the usgs. though overgrown the road had pretty good walking. around 1900 feet the road made its upper crossing of mill brook and we started our bushwhack direct up towards umpire. woods were open with some steep going, but mostly a good steady climb. hobblebush was the biggest challenge to navigate. i got us a little far west so we hit the summit ridge west of the peak, but were treated to some beautiful open glades and good views to the surrounding peaks. we enjoyed numerous game paths and mostly open evergreen woods up to the recognized highpoint. we descended more direct with good going the whole way back down to the woods road and out. |
