Comments
Comments: Started just before 9 a.m. Nip in the air, low 30s with light wind. Road walk from winter parking to Eagle's Cut Trail and all the way to the trailhead was easy with hard-packed snow. Snow on Laura Cowles Trail was well-defined (a couple of false trails on the way) and hard-packed all the way to the top. Perfect for Microspikes. Steep areas were a bit of a workout but no problem with footing. From the top of LC, some icy spots going towards the Chin. The sun had come out very bright and warm with blue skies. Outstanding 360 views. Went down Sunset Ridge Trail. On the ridge was a combination of dry exposed rock, ice on rocks and rime/snow patches. Saw some hikers coming up the ridge. Again, great visibility with fabulous panoramic views. Lower down Sunset Ridge Trail there was more snow with signs of quite a bit of postholing. Once off the ridge the snow on trail was softer due to thawing from the sun and was more granular, even slippery at times. Moderate descent. Five hours round trip.
