19-Mile lot half-full at 8AM, didn't see anyone on the road at 4:30, but I imagine some parked on the road. |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
19-Mile Brook covered with streamlets near the Carter Dome trail, all easily stepped over/rock-hopped. One snow bridge left, looking pretty sketchy though. Wooden bridge is missing half from Irene, cross on the blowdowns there.
Brook crossing right before the Camp Dodge shortcut (on descent of S. Imp Trail) is rock-hoppable, but barely.
All others crossed easily. Middle-lower section of S. Imp is basically a stream and trail combined right now. Use caution. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Couple big blowdowns on S. Imp Loop and N. Carter trail, some work done on them to allow passage, more needed (axe work required). Major blowdown blocking the S. Imp trail below the crossing where the road to Camp Dodge comes in. Pretty hard to miss, but most people seemed to be heading to/from the camp anyway.
19-mile, Carter Dome, and Carter-Moriah in good shape. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |

Microspiked from the lot to just past Zeta Pass on Carter Dome trail. Put snowshoes on here (getting soft) and they stayed on until part-way down Imp Trail, barebooted from there to the car. Ridge is very deep still (5+ feet in many places), and soft with the sun. Snowshoes are a must, even with them post-holing will occur if you get at all off the beaten trail. Posthole riddled (most hip-deep) between Carter Dome summit and the southern junction to Hight, some postholes up to Hight but not too bad. Trail in decent shape from there as everyone past that point used snowshoes. Most people I saw today put the snowshoes on by Zeta Pass or so, except those coming from the hut, they put them on just below the Carter Dome summit (after sinking hip-deep once each ;))
Beautiful day with sun, warm (mid-50s on Hight at noon), and overall a terrific day. Hard to call this a winter hike, but it counted for #25-27! |
