We walked Sawyer River Road all the way until the trailhead for the northern terminus for the Sawyer Pond Trail in order to check out conditions on the road, as well as the status of the road repair from Irene damage.
Sawyer River Road is groomed for snowmobiles for its entire length -- very easy to walk on with nothing more than light traction. There's a few inches of new powder on the groomed trail.
The large washout section of the road, courtesy of Hurricane Irene, is repaired and in pretty good condition. There's a dip in the road where the repair took place -- at its lowest, the road bed is about 6 feet below where it was pre-Irene -- and there are 25-mph snowmobile speed limit signs posted before and after this repair.
The Signal Ridge Trail appears to be nicely packed out (see post from TimC from earlier today) -- only one set of tracks going up the trail today.
The Sawyer Pond Trail has seen no traffic for some time. There's a few inches of new powder on top of two inches of crust atop a foot of powder -- all waiting for someone. |
