Comments
Comments: We got an early start (6:30am) to make the most of firmer conditions. The lower mile and a half of liberty springs is clear of ice and snow. There is some mud but not too bad given the recent weather and melting. When the ice/snow starts it is very firm, though it's pretty slick so bring your good spikes (along with rock spikes!). When the snow becomes more substantial, I was expecting it to be a mushy mess but the emerging monorail is surprisingly firm. Even the section between Liberty and Flume was firm, and if you remain firmly on the monorail then you're unlikely to posthole. We had snowshoes but there wasn't a section when we remotely needed them. Of course, when temps rise this might change so always good to have. Descending Liberty was fairly slippery down to the tent site, but it was a very decent day out there for the time of the year!
