Comments
Comments: A FINE day in the forest. Needed April 13 for calendar day. You are going to need your snowshoes for a while. Barebooted road to just past the initial bridge over the Asquamchumauke. From here, I put on spikes to just after the second bridge at 0.8 (from road). From here, I donned snowshoes and kept them on until I returned back to the road. A favorite of mine is using an abandoned section of the Gorge Brook Trail in high water as it affords nice views. Corridor is far more apparent in winter. Was still enough snow down low to not even have to bushwhack the two major washouts (hence its abandonment). Trail proper was in good shape until the first view point, then it turned very soft and choppy. I was often post holing in snowshoes. It was apparent this was not consistently snowshoe broke through the winter by the size of the emerging monorail. Bare ground in the area of East Moosilauke (the big cairn at the alpine high point) then snow enters back in. I took snowshoes off right at timberline and barebooted out and back to summit. During the entire trek it was freezing rain/snow. On the way out I did my normal cutting switchbacks and otherwise ambling in sections of open hardwood. Did note one post holer who came up after me and turned around (shocking, I thought they took pride in persevering through pain). Did note Zachary was on his way up as his car was there, but in my bushwhacking I missed him. Snow depths at last sure water are still 2' or more, increasing to 4' near timberline. The alpine veg sign has just begun to poke out, so thats atleast 4' of snow.
