Comments
Comments: Oh Pine Bend brook trail, how deceptive you are. After crossing the snow bank on the side of the road there is a nice surprisingly solid foot bed that takes you thru a beautiful forest wandering the brook that actually supported me in just bare boots for about the first mile or so. This is where Pine Bend brook trail coaxes you into thinking your going to have a beautiful hike. Then like a punch in the back of the head it gets you. Right about by the wilderness sign the trail almost instantly softened up and the snowshoes went on for the rest of the day back to the car. The trail had already been broken out earlier in the week but it didn't seem to help much. The warmer temperatures and the recent rainfall made climbing up the steeps a schlog. Coming down the steeps was half terrifying because the snow was so soft, slushy and slick that it didn't hold the snowshoes well at all. This part was very tedious and probably took more time coming down than going up. Please take note that on these sections my snowshoes were sinking in pretty deep on the decent, revealing some of the deep pockets between the rocks and branches buried under the snow. Please use extreme caution coming down as the snow isn't supportive enough to keep you feet from falling into these deep pockets. There are also several "no fall" zones on this section of trail so please be careful or just avoid this trail till conditions improve. With the warmer temperatures and heavy rain it might be awhile. After the steep section up along the ridge and from North peak to Middle it was the typical rotten spring snow where I was sinking in a few inches with every step even in snowshoes. It was a borderline type 3 fun kind of day with the rotting snow and rain, par for the course in April I guess. But like Bradygirl said in her report, I spent hundreds of dollars on this rain gear so I might as well put it to use. The one silver lining in this hike was that I gridded both North and Middle Tripyramid out 12/12! So I'll never have to experience Pine Bend Brook again!!!
