Comments
Comments: It was a beautiful, blue sky day for eclipse viewing. There were 4 other people on the summit but they had taken other trails up. We had the Stony Brook Trail to ourselves. The snow at the bottom was firm enough for barebooting for the first couple of miles. But as the day warmed up and the snow got deeper, snowshoes were the right call. As you get higher up, there is probably about 3 feet of snow packed down on the trail. About half a mile before the junction with the AT, a moose had used the trail. Their tracks continued on for another mile or so and you can see that they labored hard to walk through the deep snow. Views on the ridge were outstanding and well worth the climb! The snow softened up quite a bit as the day went on. The temperature, combined with our weight from descending means the snowpack is not as level as it was. Warm days ahead won't do any favors for the trail.
