Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water crossings today broke my soul! At least 10 that were unavoidable and took creative snowshoeing over. The banks are about 6 feet high because today was the first time the trail has been broken from Mill Pond since early February. Being plastic bags for your feet in case you miss!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Several small blowdowns which we took care of with a saw. 3 more large ones that required snowshoeing around
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: So many coyote prints, but no doggos (or people!)
Bugs
Bugs: One mosquito. Bizarre

Comments
Comments: Figured that it was my turn to do a good deed, so The Halls x 2 took on Roger’s Ledge via Mill Pond so folks who are checking out the eclipse have a hiking option in the path of totality. This was such a different ball of wax from breaking out MKT last week, since this trail hasn’t seen a soul since early February. Some of the sections were thigh deep, but most of the trail was shin to knee deep. The water crossings are mini chasms, so we broke down the banks as much as possible to allow safe crossings. The trail meanders in a few spots to manage the blowdowns and truly unsafe crossings, but otherwise we successfully stayed on point. A small amount of ice present on the final approach to the summit cone, so we veered to the right, but the crampons on our Tubbs Flex Alps were sufficient. We didn’t venture too far out on the ledges because the snow build up was massive, and it was hard to tell what was overhang and what was stable. No sign of moose on the ledges, but saw two young bulls on the drive in on York Pond Road! The trench looks pretty good for just two people breaking trail out and back, but snowshoes are DEFINITELY still needed.
