Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 31, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at the Beaver Brook cross country ski lot, which is plowed.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Mud - Significant, Slush, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossings are open; water levels are low so they are easy rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are three new duck unders (compared with my February report) on the Gale River Trail. GRT has been spared (how is that possible?!) and there is one super awkward clamber-over just below the Galehead view spot.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: I propose a law that protects us from mosquito bites during the same week that we broke trail. Who is with me? (I can’t believe that the mosquitoes are out already).
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: I packed out a lot of trash that was at the Hut (so frustrating), and someone’s Hillsounds storage bag. Message me about the latter if it is yours.

Comments
Comments: Trail conditions were solid at sunrise but (as expected) mashed potatoes by mid morning. It’s dealer’s choice for traction noting that there are not a lot postholes currently and even when it warmed up, I was only making slight divets with my boots. I tried my snowshoes twice but they weren’t helpful as the trail has seen a lot of boots and it’s not necessarily flat. I would very much recommend bringing snowshoes on this route because the snow is deep and as the temperatures continue to warm the conditions are going to do the normal spring thing and worsen. There were 5 of us on this route today and we all had snowshoes.
And all 5 of us skipped the Twins. Twinway has two sets of boot prints and appears quite unconsolidated; GRT heading to Garfield is not broken out.
This was a bonus hike for March - I never expected to have these conditions today. And woohoo, did y’all see tomorrow’s forecast?!
