A tale of two trail. Heading up Mt. Major trail very little bare ground. Use microspikes and happy for the extra purchase on steeper areas. Ledges mostly still snow covered with ice lurking beneath. Used ledge bypass as steep ledges had lots of blue ice and very thin veneer of snow--would have taken crampons out of my pack to do that bit. On the Boulder Loop bareboots the best option--upper half mostly bare (south facing) including steeper areas. Lower parts on and off again monorail. |
